Blog Post #5: Interview synopsis and final reflection

Background:  For my Blog 5 post, I interviewed my brother, Josh, who unfortunately made some bad decisions early in his life that led him to serving a few years in prison. Josh was excited to share his input on the struggles he has faced since being released. He hopes that his words will give ex-offenders out there hope, while also suppressing negative stereotypes that are connected with ex-offenders. Release:  Prior to his release, Josh's plan of action was to get out, live at home for a few months, find a job, and then move out. He commented that a lot of his excitement was toward seeing our mom. After his release he shared that it was very weird having so much free time. In prison, every day has a set schedule inmates follow. Josh initially thought having the freedom to go about your day how you pleased would be an easy adjustment, however, it was very difficult at first.  Adjusting:  When Josh finally got home, he stuck close to our mom. This came ...

Blog Post 4- Preparing for the Interview

Interview Plan: For this assignment, I will be interviewing my brother, Josh. An ex-convict who is continuing to try and get back on his feet. Josh will be coming by the house on Saturday, and I plan for the interview to last about 30 minutes. Interview Questions:  I have shared with Josh that I am doing a project for a communications course, and that his participation will help raise awareness for ex-convicts and hopefully help diminish the amount of stereotypes that exist. Initial Release:  1)  Did you have a pre constructed plan of what you wanted to accomplish once released? 2) What did you most look forward to after your release? 3) What was your first meal after your release? 4)   Was it weird at first having so much free time? Adjusting:  1) Was there a particular person or person(s) you stayed close to after your release? (ex: Mentor(s)) 2) W hat w as the biggest challenge/adjustment you faced outside of prison? ...

Concordance Academy of Leadership The history of the place/group--how long it’s been around, who started it, and why? Concordance was started by former Wells Fargo CEO, Danny Ludeman in 2013 with hopes to reduce the recidivism rate and help families stay out of prison. Mr. Ludeman essentially combined with Project COPE. A company that provided transitional housing for ex-offenders.  (Front desk) The goals/mission/purpose of the place/group The mission of this organization is to stop the revolving door of offenders returning back to incarceration. This is done by providing participants an abundance of services to help get them back on their feet.  The services of the place/group/organization (This is one of several meeting rooms for participants) Concordance Academy takes a holistic approach when putting members through this program by combining services such as housing, employment, behavioral health, counseling, and substance rehab all into one program...

“In Their Shoes” Project BLOG POST #2 Seeking Out Multiple Stories – “In Their Voices”

Jordan Cochrum- Microculture Blog Post 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SxzcgxTBTE This is Lamont, he served 8 years in prison for armed robbery. This video covers his life after prison and the struggles he's faced in society. Stereotypes of ex-convicts have affected Lamont greatly. In the video, you will find that finding a job is one of the biggest things Lamont struggles achieve. I believe Lamont made this video for two reasons. First, to show the consequences that come with a criminal record, and second, to give convicts a sense of hope that even though things will get tough, there is a light at the end of tunnel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=55&v=AINlt4NrzYk This video follows John Maddox and Conan Ordiway. Each are ex-convicts and are interviewed while at a tattoo business in West Texas that removes regretful tattoos for a very low price. Maddox talks about how the outside world sees him as negative with his tattoos. In addition, Ordiway s...

Jordan Cochrum Blog Post 1

Blog Post #1 1) The microculture I have chosen to study is ex-convicts. I chose this group because I am interested to learn more about what life after prison entails, as well as what prejudices and or stereotypes ex convicts face when trying to get back on their feet. 2) To gather information, I plan to interview 1 friend and 1 sibling I know who unfortunately had to do time for the crimes that they committed. 3) To experience the culture I feel may be tough. I don't believe prisons just let people come in and tour. As a substitute, I may watch multiple videos about prison life that also include interviews from inmates. 4) I believe America's general stereotypes of ex-convicts are that they are unskilled, dangerous people who are up to no good. I also believe some American's think if you go to prison it automatically means you killed someone. We don't account for other things someone can be sent to prison for. Below I have attached a link to an article that ...
